Kanye is Kanye. And Kanye is brilliant. Even if you hate him on a personal level, if you appreciate good (excellent) music, you respectfully hate him. Then you hate yourself for loving his music because you know it wouldn’t be as complex and sophisticated if he didn’t possess the exact attributes you hate. Yeezus is just that–full of grandeur and pretentiousness that we all know are fully justified by the nearly-unmatched quality of his work. He’s like Gatsby meets Liberace meets Lamborghini meets Lennon meets Pharaoh (in the son of god Ra sense, just look at the album title for track #3).
Yeezus definitely marks “the monster about to come alive again,” as heard in the opening song “On Sight.” The album is dark, dirty, and disgusting through a dark dystopian chaotic synth sound juxtaposed with tribal, almost primal-feeling percussion. It appears that this album aims to set Kanye’s legacy in the eyes of the people, perhaps even himself, by seizing the staff and proclaiming that he doesn’t care about your opinion, he is the best. This sentiment displays in “New Slaves” when he raps “You see there’s leaders and there’s followers, but I’d rather be a dick than a swallower.” Maybe it’s a declaration to reaffirm his beliefs as well as ours because of his newborn child. Perhaps Kanye created Yeezus because he knew his life, possibly his music too, would never be the same after his baby. We don’t doubt Kanye will continue to meld musical magic, but this latest event could mark an evolution of Mr. West. Whatever the outcome, we’re thankful for Yeezus.

June 17, 2013 (Los Angeles, CA) – Malaysian-born songstress YUNA has teamed up with VEVO to premiere her highly anticipated music video for “I Wanna Go.” “The ‘I Wanna Go’ video was so much fun to shoot,” exclaims YUNA. “My friends, Julian Schratter, Didi Ramlan and I brainstormed the idea for the video, shot it on the Super8 and the outcome was beautiful! I hope the fans will enjoy the colours, the city, the sun and the sea just as much as I did!”
“I Wanna Go” was produced by INCUBUS guitarist Mike Einziger, and is featured on YUNA’s most recent release, ‘Sixth Street.’ The five-song digital EP was YUNA’s debut with record label Verve Records, and was released last month. The EP is currently available for purchase on iTunes, and “Let Love Come Through,” another track featured on ‘Sixth Street,’ can be heard here.
Rolling Stone has championed YUNA as having, “certified indie cred and massive pop potential,” and Complex described her as, “a deeply refreshing addition to America’s musical landscape.” She’s performed on national television, was a finalist for MTV Iggy’s “Best New Band In The World,” has played both Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo, and has had multiple songs featured in movies and on soundtracks. Most recently, she appeared on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,” where she performed her duet with multi-platinum recording artist OWL CITY, “Shine Your Way,” the theme song in Dream Works Animation’s 3D comedy, THE CROODS.
Figure published this track a few days ago and we’re obsessed. The dubstep/drum & bass artist has such an intense, signature sound that amps up any situation. Stay tuned for his October album Monsters Vol.4.
Chris Brown filmed this video in Compton last month for his song “Don’t Think They Know,” which features unreleased vocals from the late, great Aaliyah. This video and track are a preview for his upcoming album release X, scheduled to drop July 16th.
