HIP-HOP | Clinton Sparks – “Gold Rush” f/ 2 Chainz, Macklemore, & D.A.

gold-rush-vibe

“Get Familiar” is Clinton Sparks’ tagline. Surprisingly (and unfortunately), a lot of the country has not gotten familiar with Clinton Sparks. He’s a very respected producer/songwriter/DJ/singer/rapper/etc. in the music industry, however not well-known outside of the L.A./Las Vegas music scenes (okay he’s known, but not as much as perhaps he should be). We’re predicting that this is about to change due to his brand new single “Gold Rush.” People are about to “Get Familiar.”

“Gold Rush” serves as Clinton Sparks’ first single release from his upcoming album Disco Ball & Chain, which releases later this year (we plan on dropping into the studio next week to check out the progress). It’s a tremendously fun song with thundering bass, funky guitar and piano, an annoying little whistle that you hate to love, plus two of today’s hottest rappers–Macklemore and 2 Chainz. Macklemore alone has spots #1, #7, and #78 on the Billboard Hot 100 and singlehandedly bailed out the secondhand-store market. 2 Chainz has begun building a prestigious rap game resume, appearing on some of the hottest singles recently (“Mercy,” “No Lie,” “Rich As F**k,” “F**kin’ Problems”). Tie it all together with Sparks’ producing mastership and ”Gold Rush” has the potential to be a significant Billboard hit–like big significant.

Clinton Sparks previewed “Gold Rush” last Monday in Madison, WI during his Yahoo! Music on the Road tour, but politely asked we not leak it. The sneak peak actually featured Rick Ross, who was later dropped from the single and replaced by 2 Chainz. We’re assuming that 2 Chainz was a fresher choice who has (like Macklemore) recently jumped into the music elite, and could be the difference maker in how big this track becomes. “Gold Rush” couldn’t have been released at a better moment–just in time for the start of summer–one of those perfect summer tracks you cruise to with the windows down, shades on, blaring until the speakers bleed.

Check out the EXCLUSIVE video below (we apologize for the lack of sound and video quality) which features Rick Ross’ vocals on the track.

CONCERT RECAP | Macklemore & Ryan Lewis w/ Timeflies

RTM dropped by Lafayatte College this past weekend as we were lucky enough to get tickets to their Spring Concert which featured headliners Macklemore & Ryan Lewis accompanied by a duo that is very familiar with the college circuit, Timeflies.

Heavy rain doused Fisher Stadium during John Hamilton’s opening set, forcing a delay of the remainder of the show. At one point, everyone had to be evacuated due to lightning. But the fates aligned in fans’ favor and after a half-hour delay, the concert resumed as Timeflies took the stage.

“I Choose U”

After a quick set change, the Seattle duo stepped out to a frenzied crowd of all ages and all levels of intoxication. They kicked off their set just like they did with their album, playing “Ten Thousand Hours” followed by a few lesser known tracks for the true fans. One of those being a favorite of hours, the Dave Niehaus tribute ”My Oh My” .

Then Mack and Ryan surprised us all when they rifled through their 2 hit singles smack dab in the middle of their set. Macklemore requested a fur coat from the crowd for “Thrift Shop” and a couple songs later blew the metaphorical roof off the place with “Can’t Hold Us”.

Once the energy levels hit their peak, they brought it back to their roots and what makes them so special…the lyrical storytelling in their songs. “Same Love” at the whole crowd signing along in unison.

And “Wing$” brought out the kid in all of us :)

For an encore, the guys only provided the best. A voice from the heavens rang down, confusing half the crowd while exciting the rest, and Raven Bowie appeared in his iconic cape and blonde hair to sing “And We Danced”. The party could only end one way, and that would be with a celebration…an “Irish Celebration” to be exact. The perfect drinking song to cap off a not-so-perfect drinking day.

CONCERT RECAP | Fall Out Boy w/ Special Guest: Clinton Sparks – 5/13/13 | Majestic Theatre – Madison, WI

Raw Tracks Music | Clinton Sparks | Fall Out Boy |

This past Monday in Madison, WI, we attended the Fall Out Boy concert featuring special guest Clinton Sparks. The concert was part of the Yahoo! On The Road free tour, which is visiting 27 cities with 20 music acts and 10 comedians. Going into the show, we were fairly perplexed by the artist pairing, but it turned out quite refreshing having the variety of the two contrasting acts. It was like eating a serving of sushi for dinner and then having a serving of steak–freaking awesome! We have to give a big RTM shoutout to the Yahoo! On The Road team for organizing and throwing such a well-organized and incredibly successful event.

When we arrived at the theatre (about ten minutes prior to the doors opening), the line to enter the venue stretched to the end of the block and wrapped around the corner. The crowd appeared to be fairly younger, late teens to early twenties, and it was noticeable that they were there mainly to see Fall Out Boy. However, Clinton Sparks was the perfect offset act to energize the crowd while simultaneously providing a non-alternative/punk rock experience. The diehard Fall Out Boy fans were slightly slow to embrace Clinton Sparks, until he dropped one of the few tracks that could rouse almost anyone in Madison from youth to alum to student to bum–a remix of House of Pain’s “Jump Around.” After that, the crowd warmed up and Clinton unveiled an exclusive preview of his collaboration with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis which is set to drop in the next few weeks.

Following Clinton Sparks, Fall Out Boy took the stage with an uproar of applause. Even without having had an album release in five years, these guys were not forgotten by their fans, not even slightly. It was really neat seeing the dedication and appreciation of their fanbase, and the band reflected the same feelings back to their fans. We were really impressed at how amazing Fall Out Boy sounded live. They were as on key live as they are on all their recordings. The song selection was great–the band played basically an even mix of new and old songs–ranging from tracks off their new album Save Rock And Roll such as “The Phoenix” and “My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark (Light Em Up)” to their “classic” hits “Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down” and “Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy.” Check out a very crude video of “Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down” below.  The 2006 high school senior in us was beside himself.

This Yahoo! On The Road tour is absolutely amazing. Please try to check out a show near you. The remaining tour dates have ridiculous lineups, including acts by Imagine Dragons & Owl City (happening tonight, 5/15 in St. Louis, MO), The Lumineers, Dispatch, Fun., Empire of the Sun, John Legend, Gossip, Nick Rutherford, DJ Michelle Pesce, and many more.

I.O.U - Hands In The Air

Inside Our Universe (I.O.U.) released this video last week for their track “Hands In The Air,” using a Rihanna “Stay” sample. It’s really, really catchy.

Check out their Affiliated Artist page to learn more about this great duo. These guys are very good. Can’t wait to hear what else they have in store.
